Bible-based teaching and Bible-based syllabus

New SALT offers a balanced teaching programme which means children do not hear one popular Bible story several times while missing out on others.

With the help of Bible scholars, education experts and children's leaders we've created a Bible-based syllabus. Over four years you can be confident that SALT will cover most of the Bible and provide a wide coverage of Christian doctrine. We believe it will also enable churches of all denominations and traditions to integrate the programme with teaching of their own emphasis.

With a focus on one Bible passage each week and a Gospel and Old Testament series included in each issue, SALT provides flexibility for churches of all denominations and traditions to offer a strong Bible-based programme.

For those churches that follow the Lectionary, there are resources in SALT All ages linking the children's material with what the rest of the church is doing. We also link SALT to festivals and events in the church year, such as Pentecost, Lent and Mother’s day.

Flexible

Scripture Union recognises that every church situation is different, so there is a wide range of activities to choose from. Simply select from the clearly laid out options to create a balanced programme.

SALT features a simple three-step preparation to create a lesson. Teachers select from a range of activities in three sections:

  1. Way in: activities introduce the Bible passage & theme
  2. Bible discovery: Bible text and study
  3. Way forward: ways to respond to and apply the Bible

The menu approach means that you can use New SALT:

if your group is large or small
if you have a 1arge or small area
if you meet for 20 minutes or 2 hours
if you can make a noise or must be quiet
if you meet on Sunday or a weekday

Each week the editor's choice gives a balanced programme lasting 30 minutes.

At least one Gospel series and one Old Testament series is in each issue. The syllabus links with major events in the church year so that New SALT can be incorporated easily into church life. There are bonus All-age services for Harvest, Christmas, Mothers Day and Good Friday.

Age Specific

New SALT equips and empowers the Church to engage with the Bible, taking account of how people of different ages learn:

Young children explore the Bible in straightforward ways, using experiences from their own imagination and curiosity.
Older children and young people relate Bible themes to their lives, exploring contemporary issues relevant to their expanding world.
Adults seek breadth and depth in Bible teaching to explore the spiritual realities and challenges as they grow in their Christian faith.

Each age group has its own teacher’s and pupils’ material but a common Bible focus. Age groups are:

3-4+ with Sparklers for pupils
5-7+ with All Stars for pupils
8-10+ with Trailblazers for pupils
11-13+ with Lazer for pupils

The New SALT teachers’ magazines have:

80 pages
colour features.
resource pages to photocopy

Children's activity resources are full colour.

New SALT All Ages includes sermon outlines, as well as ideas for worship and adult groups. It provides resources for those using the Revised (or Common Worship) Lectionary.            Return to top

Help for Leaders

We know that the better prepared the teacher is the more the lesson will help students. New SALT provides help for teachers:

In the teacher’s manual each week the Bible focus helps teachers interact with the Bible and grow in faith.
An in-depth training article is in every issue to be pulled out and kept. This can be used individually or as a basis for group discussion.
Extra activities for mixed and wider age groups in each series in the syllabus.
Information about additional resources available and wider news of Scripture Union across the world.

Training Seminar

Developed locally, this has been designed to help those who are using SALT for the first time. The programme will be especially helpful to the inexperienced teacher.
