SUPA Seminars

Scripture Union personnel have developed three Seminars for use in SA’s primary schools - “The Gift of Jesus” for Christmas, “Can you believe it?” for Easter and “Friends for Life” about friendship. Each is up to an hour long. Here is a summary about each of the programs.

seminars1
The Gift of Jesus

  • Suitable for Year Levels: R-6.
  • Ideal for up to 80 students at one time.

This seminar will assist students to understand the connections between some familiar Christmas traditions and the events of that first Christmas. They will be able to explore one of the earliest accounts of Jesus’ birth as a primary source document, and then use Christmas decorations as visual reminders of these events. They will also be given the opportunity to consider ways that they might, in a true spirit of “Christmas giving”, have a positive influence on people and the world around them.

Can you believe it?
seminars2
  • Suitable for Year levels: R-7.
  • Ideal for a single class of 30 students but can be used with up to 3 classes at one time.
  • Works best in a hall/activity room with a space reserved to perform the drama.

The events of the first Easter as recorded in the Bible can seem difficult to believe. This program explores the emotions of the people involved in these extraordinary events, and gives an opportunity to explore our own feelings as we encounter these events through the eye-witness accounts in the Bible. The seminar also provides an opportunity to examine some enduring Easter traditions (hot cross buns and chocolate eggs), and how they have developed over the years.

seminars3
Friends for Life

  • Suitable for year levels: 5-7.
  • Ideal for a single class of students.
  • Works best in a hall/activity room.

This program has been written to introduce the local church to schools that are not willing to commit to a three week program, like the Christian Option Programs. It seeks to help young people explore various perspectives on friendship, including how to relate to others in helpful ways especially in times of conflict. Forgiveness is highlighted as the most helpful quality to cultivate in developing good friendships. What does the Bible – the key book for Christians – say about how to relate to one another? What did Jesus’ friendships look like? How do these things affect our lives today?
